Pablo Picasso

Picasso kept thousands of his own works all his life. After his death they came to the French state, and they fill a seventeenth-century mansion in Le Marais: the Musée Picasso.

The life of Pablo Picasso

Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881, the son of a drawing teacher, and could draw like a master in his teens. He settled in Paris in 1904, in a ramshackle studio building in Montmartre called the Bateau-Lavoir. There, in 1907, he painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, and with Georges Braque went on to invent Cubism.

He changed style every few years for seventy years: the Blue Period, Cubism, a return to classical figures, the fury of Guernica in 1937, and a flood of painting, sculpture, ceramics and prints in old age. He died at Mougins, in the south of France, in 1973.
