The life of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Toulouse-Lautrec was born in 1864 into one of the oldest noble families of the south of France. Two broken legs in his teens never healed properly, and he stopped growing at about a metre and a half. He came to Paris to study painting and settled in Montmartre, where nobody stared.
He painted and drew the dancers, singers and prostitutes of the quarter with sympathy and without flattery. His poster for the Moulin Rouge in 1891 made him famous overnight. He drank heavily, and died in 1901 at the age of thirty-six.
