Park Güell: Gaudí's garden on the hill

Eusebi Güell wanted a garden suburb for rich families above the city. Almost nobody bought, and what is left is a park: Gaudí's gingerbread gatehouses, a mosaic dragon, a hall of columns and a terrace with one of the best views of Barcelona.

What to see at Park Güell

    1. The dragon

The mosaic lizard or dragon on the double stair at the entrance, the park's emblem and its most photographed creature.

    2. The Hypostyle Room

A forest of Doric columns planned as the estate's market hall, with mosaic medallions of broken tile on its ceiling.

    3. The serpentine bench

The long, curving seat round the great terrace above the hall, covered in broken tiles and pottery by Gaudí's collaborator Josep Maria Jujol.

    4. The gatehouses

Two pavilions at the gate like houses from a fairy tale, with roofs of white and coloured tile.

    5. The viaducts

Paths carried on leaning stone columns that look grown rather than built, winding up the hill.

    On the map

    Before you go

    • Book a time slot for the monumental area. Tickets are sold for each half hour and the day often sells out.
    • Come at opening or late in the day: the terrace has little shade.
    • The park is on a steep hill. From the metro it is a climb, partly by outdoor escalators.
    • The Gaudí House Museum has its own ticket.

A garden city that found no buyers

The industrialist Eusebi Güell, Gaudí's great patron, bought the hillside of the Muntanya Pelada and asked him to lay out a private estate of houses and gardens. Work went on from 1900 to 1914. Only two houses were built, and the city bought the estate and opened it as a public park in 1926.

Gaudí himself lived in one of the two houses from 1906 to 1925. It is now the Gaudí House Museum, with furniture he designed.

The heart of the park, the monumental area with the stair, the hall and the terrace, can be visited only with a ticket for a set time. The rest of the park's paths and woods are open to all. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Gaudí's works.
