Fundació Joan Miró: the painter's own museum

Joan Miró was born in Barcelona, and he wanted his work shown here, in a place open to young artists. The museum he founded on Montjuïc is a white building of courtyards, terraces and daylight, designed by his friend Josep Lluís Sert, and it holds the largest collection of his work anywhere.

A museum the painter made for himself

Miró was born in Barcelona in 1893 and, though he lived much of his life in Paris and Majorca, kept close ties to the city. He set up the foundation in 1975, with his own gift of works at its core, and he died in 1983.

The building, by Josep Lluís Sert, who had also designed Miró's studio in Majorca, is one of the landmarks of modern architecture in the city: white concrete, vaulted roofs that catch the light, and rooms that open on to patios and terraces.

Besides Miró's paintings, sculptures and tapestries, it shows works given in his honour by other artists, and holds exhibitions of contemporary art.
