Painter and sculptor, 1893 to 1983

Joan Miró

Joan Miró was born in a passage off the Carrer de Ferran and kept coming back to Catalonia all his life. His signs, stars, birds, women, the moon, became a language of their own, and his foundation on Montjuïc follows it from the first landscapes to the great canvases of the 1970s.

The life of Joan Miró

Miró was born in Barcelona, the son of a goldsmith, and painted the farm at Mont-roig and the villages of Catalonia in his first years. In Paris in the 1920s he met the Surrealists and painted his way into a world of signs.

He lived through the Civil War in France and later settled in Majorca, where he died in 1983. He set up the Fundació Joan Miró in 1975, in a building by his friend Josep Lluís Sert, and his mosaic is set into the pavement of La Rambla.
