Painter and sculptor, 1881 to 1973

Pablo Picasso

Picasso came to Barcelona at thirteen, when his father took a post at the city's art school, and left for Paris at twenty-three. The museum on the Carrer de Montcada shows how fast he learnt: the academic pictures of a boy of fifteen, the blue period, and fifty years later his long answer to Velázquez.

The life of Pablo Picasso

The family moved from A Coruña to Barcelona in 1895, and the boy passed into the art school of La Llotja. His academic pictures of those years, First Communion and Science and Charity, made his name in the city before he was sixteen.

He met the city's artists at Els Quatre Gats, went back and forth to Paris and settled there in 1904. The museum opened in 1963, and he gave it the Las Meninas series in 1968 and a large gift of his early work in 1970.
