Ramon Casas

Ramon Casas painted Barcelona at the turn of the century: its processions, its riots, its cafés and its people. He paid for most of Els Quatre Gats, painted himself and its host on a tandem for its wall, and drew the city's whole cast of characters in charcoal.

The life of Ramon Casas

Casas was born to a rich family in Barcelona and went to Paris at fifteen to study painting. He lived in Montmartre with Rusiñol and Utrillo in 1890, and brought back a cool, grey, modern way of seeing.

In Barcelona he painted the city's public life, from the Corpus procession to the charge of the police on a crowd, and made some of the best posters of the age. He was the main backer of Els Quatre Gats, and his charcoal portraits of the people he knew, more than two hundred of them, are in the MNAC.
