Painter, 1872 to 1911

Isidre Nonell

Isidre Nonell painted those that the Barcelona of the modernistes did not want to see: beggars, the sick, and above all the gypsy women of the city's edges, folded into their shawls. Success came with an exhibition in 1910, a few months before he died.

The life of Isidre Nonell

Nonell was born in Barcelona and trained there. In the 1890s he painted the outskirts of the city with a group of young painters, and drew the victims of the colonial wars and of cretinism in the Pyrenees. In Paris he was admired, and the young Picasso, who used his studio, learnt from him.

From about 1901 he painted almost nothing but gypsy women, alone or in pairs, in thick, dark paint lit with colour. He was mocked for it in Barcelona until an exhibition of 1910 was a success. He died of typhoid the next winter, at thirty-eight.
