Flamenco in Barcelona: a night at a tablao
Flamenco was born in Andalusia, but Barcelona has its own flamenco story. The great dancer Carmen Amaya grew up on its beaches, and today its tablaos, small stages where you sit a few metres from the dancers, fill every night of the week.

Why a flamenco show is worth it
Flamenco is song, guitar and dance together, the singing first. UNESCO put it on its list of the intangible heritage of humanity in 2010.
Barcelona's flamenco came with the Gitano communities of the city and the migrants from the south. Carmen Amaya, born in Barcelona in 1918, danced as a child in the bars of the Raval and became one of the most famous dancers in the world.
In a tablao, named after the wooden floor the dancers stamp on, you eat or drink while the show goes on, close to the stage.
What to see
The dance
The baile, with its heelwork, turns and the long-trained dress swept round with a kick.
The song
The cante, often a lament, which sets the rhythm the dancer answers.
The guitar
The flamenco guitar, playing alone or following the singer and the dancer beat for beat.
The palmas
The rhythmic clapping of the performers at the back of the stage.
How to do it well
- Book ahead: the best-known tablaos sell out, especially at weekends.
- A show lasts about an hour. Most tablaos sell a ticket with a drink, and some with dinner.
- Sit near the front if you can: the stage is small.
- Ask before filming: many shows do not allow video.
