Santa Maria del Mar: the cathedral of the sea

Barcelona's cathedral is grander, but Santa Maria del Mar is the church Barcelonans love. It was built by the people of the waterfront for themselves, quickly and in one style, and its nave, wide and bare and full of light, is one of the finest Gothic spaces in Europe.

Why Santa Maria del Mar is worth it

The church was built between 1329 and 1383 in the quarter of La Ribera, then the city's port and merchants' district. Its parishioners gave money and labour, and the porters of the harbour carried its stones on their backs from the quarries of Montjuïc.

Because it went up in barely half a century it has a rare unity: three tall naves of almost equal height, slender octagonal columns set wide apart, and few ornaments. The fittings burned in a fire in 1936, and the bare stone has been left as it was.

Around it lies El Born, a quarter of medieval lanes, palaces and small shops. Its old iron market hall stands over the excavated streets of the city destroyed after the siege of 1714.

    What to see

    1. The nave

Three naves of nearly equal height carried on slender columns, the purest example of Catalan Gothic.

    2. The roof

Guided visits climb to the terraces and the roof of the church, over the lanes of the Born.

    3. The rose window

The great round window over the main door, rebuilt in the fifteenth century after an earthquake.

    4. The Born market

The iron market hall of the nineteenth century, now a cultural centre showing the excavated streets of 1714.

    5. The Fossar de les Moreres

The small square beside the church where the defenders of the city who died in the siege of 1714 are buried.

    How to do it well

    • The church can be entered free at set hours of the day. The roof tour is paid and runs at set times.
