Sant Pau: a hospital built like a garden city
Ten minutes' walk up the avenue from the Sagrada Família, and far quieter, is Barcelona's other great Modernista ensemble: a hospital of red brick, tiled domes and mosaic, laid out among gardens because its architect believed beauty and fresh air helped the sick to heal.

A hospital in a garden
The Hospital de la Santa Creu, founded in the fifteenth century in the old town, outgrew its building, and a bequest from the banker Pau Gil paid for a new one. Lluís Domènech i Montaner designed it as a set of separate pavilions in gardens, joined by tunnels underground, and it was built from 1902 to 1930.
It worked as a hospital until 2009, when the patients moved to a new building beside it. The pavilions were restored and opened to visitors as the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau in 2014.
It was listed by UNESCO in 1997, together with Domènech's Palau de la Música Catalana.
