Brasserie Lipp

Lipp is where French politics has had lunch for a century. The room is narrow, tiled and mirrored, and where you are seated in it says what the house thinks of you.

    The parliament across the river

Léonard Lipp and his wife Pétronille opened the brasserie on the boulevard Saint-Germain on 27 October 1880. Marcellin Cazes took it over, redecorated it in 1920, and turned it into the dining room of writers, publishers and ministers.

It has its place in the history of the Fifth Republic too. On 29 October 1965 the Moroccan opposition leader Mehdi Ben Barka was abducted on the pavement in front of it and never seen again, a scandal that shook France.
