From the 1940s Matisse, after an operation that left him weak, drew with scissors, cutting shapes from paper painted with gouache, which his assistants pinned up under his direction.
The Parakeet and the Mermaid, made in 1952, was made for the walls of his apartment in Nice. The Stedelijk also has one of the odalisques he painted there in the 1920s.
