Painter, 1872 to 1944

Piet Mondrian

Mondrian began painting Dutch landscapes, mills and trees in the evening light. Step by step he took away everything but the essentials, until only straight black lines and a few planes of primary colour were left. The Stedelijk has every stage of the journey.

The life of Piet Mondrian

Mondrian trained in Amsterdam and painted the polders and rivers round the city. In Paris from 1912 he met Cubism, and his trees and church fronts broke up into grids of short lines.

Back in the Netherlands during the First World War he founded the movement De Stijl with Theo van Doesburg, and arrived at what he called Neoplasticism: black lines, white ground and primary colours. He lived in Paris, then London, and from 1940 in New York, where he died in 1944.
