Stedelijk Museum: the twentieth century on Museumplein

Next door to Van Gogh is the museum that shows what came after him. The Stedelijk has collected the art of its own time for more than a century, and it was here, in the decades after the war, that Amsterdam learned to look at the new.

What to see at the Stedelijk

    1. Malevich

One of the largest groups of Kazimir Malevich's paintings outside Russia, from his peasant figures to the pure squares and crosses of Suprematism.

    2. Mondrian and De Stijl

Piet Mondrian's grids of black lines and primary colours, and the furniture of Gerrit Rietveld, among them the Red Blue Chair.

    3. Matisse's Parakeet and the Mermaid

A wall of cut and painted paper, leaves, fruit, a bird and a swimming figure, made by Matisse in 1952 when he could no longer paint at the easel.

    4. Chagall and the Expressionists

Chagall's Self-Portrait with Seven Fingers, and paintings by Kirchner, Kandinsky and the painters of the early century.

    5. Karel Appel and CoBrA

The bright, childlike, violent pictures of the group of painters from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam who started out in 1948.

    6. Design

Chairs, posters, ceramics and typography from a century of Dutch and international design, one of the museum's great strengths.

A municipal museum that bought the new

The Stedelijk, the municipal museum, opened on 14 September 1895, in a brick building in the Dutch Neo-Renaissance style by Adriaan Willem Weissman, paid for largely by the bequest of a collector, Sophia Adriana de Bruyn.

In the twentieth century it became one of the great museums of modern art in Europe. It bought early and boldly: the Russian avant-garde, the Dutch movement De Stijl, the CoBrA painters of the post-war years, American Abstract Expressionism and Pop.

In 2012 the museum reopened with a new wing by Benthem Crouwel Architects, a smooth white form on Museumplein that Amsterdam nicknamed the bathtub. It holds the entrance and the large exhibition halls, and joins the old building behind it.
