A'DAM Lookout: Amsterdam from a hundred metres up
Amsterdam is flat, and most of it is low. From the roof of the A'DAM Tower, across the water from Central Station, you see the whole of it at once: the canal ring, the towers of its churches, the port and the green polders running out to the horizon.

On the map
Before you go
- Take the free ferry towards Buiksloterweg from behind Central Station. It runs every few minutes, day and night, and lands a short walk from the tower.
- Go up an hour before sunset and watch the light go down over the port.
- Choose a clear day. In low cloud the view can disappear.
- The EYE Film Museum is next door, across the square.
An oil company's tower, opened to the view
The tower on the north bank of the IJ was built in 1971 as the offices of the oil company Shell, to a design by Arthur Staal. When Shell left, it was rebuilt as the A'DAM Tower, with a hotel, clubs and restaurants, and its roof was opened to visitors as the Lookout in 2016.
A lift with lights and sound takes you to the twentieth floor in twenty seconds. From there you go up to the outdoor deck on the roof, a hundred metres above the water, or stay behind the glass of the indoor deck with its binoculars.
Amsterdam-Noord, across the water, has grown fast on old industrial land in recent years. The ferry over the IJ is free and takes a few minutes.
