Rembrandt House: the painter at home
Rembrandt bought this house at the height of his fame and lost it nineteen years later, when his debts caught up with him. The list his creditors made of everything in it, room by room, is why it can be seen today as he left it.

What to see at the Rembrandt House
The studio
The big room on the upper floor where Rembrandt painted, set up again with an easel, canvases and the materials of his time.
The cabinet of curiosities
His collection of shells, coral, antique busts, weapons and animal specimens, put together again from the inventory, crowded on the walls and shelves of a small room.
The etchings
The museum owns almost all of Rembrandt's etchings, and shows a changing choice of them, from small self-portraits to biblical scenes.
The etching demonstrations
In the etching room, a printer inks a copper plate and pulls a print on a press of the kind Rembrandt used.
The kitchen and the box beds
The old Dutch way of sleeping, in a cupboard in the wall, and a kitchen with its tiles and its hearth.

A house rebuilt from a bankrupt's inventory
The house in the Jodenbreestraat was built around 1606 and given its classical front around 1627. Rembrandt bought it on 5 January 1639 for thirteen thousand guilders, a sum he never finished paying, and lived and worked here until 1658.
In 1656 he was declared bankrupt, and an inventory was drawn up of everything he owned: his paintings, his prints, his shells, busts and weapons, his furniture. The house was sold at auction two years later.
The city bought it in 1907, and it opened as a museum on 10 June 1911. The rooms were later furnished again from the inventory of 1656, so that the kitchen, the box beds, the art room and the studio are as close as anyone can make them to what he knew.
