Our Lord in the Attic: a church under the roof

From the canal it is a merchant's house like its neighbours. Climb its stairs, through the parlour and the kitchen, and you come out in a church with galleries, an organ and an altar, built in the attic when the faith it served was not allowed in the street.

    • The stairs are steep and narrow, as in every canal house. Wear flat shoes and take your time.
    • Go in the morning: the house is small, and a few groups fill it.
    • The museum is on the edge of the red-light district, a few minutes from Central Station and the Oude Kerk.

A church the street could not see

After the Reformation of 1578, Amsterdam's Catholics could no longer worship in public. They were tolerated, as long as they were not seen, and they built clandestine churches, schuilkerken, inside ordinary houses.

The house on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal was built in 1630, and between 1661 and 1663 its top three floors were turned into a church. The Dutch call it Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder, Our Lord in the Attic.

When the Church of St Nicholas opened near the station, the attic church was no longer needed, and on 28 April 1888 it opened as a museum, the second oldest in Amsterdam after the Rijksmuseum. In 2024 it was given the European Heritage Label.
