Opened in 1970
In 1970 Peter Pulitzer, a grandson of Joseph Pulitzer, bought a group of run-down canal houses on the Prinsengracht and the Keizersgracht and restored them as a hotel. It opened that year as the Howard Johnson Hotel.
Over the next thirty years he bought the houses next door one by one, until the hotel filled twenty-five of them.
