The life of Rembrandt
Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam in the early 1630s and quickly became the city's most fashionable portrait painter. In 1639 he bought the house on the Jodenbreestraat, now the Rembrandt House, and three years later painted The Night Watch for the hall of the musketeers.
His fortunes fell, and after his bankruptcy he moved to the Jordaan, where he painted the Syndics and The Jewish Bride. The Rijksmuseum has The Night Watch and the great late pictures, and the Rembrandt House almost all his etchings.
