Painter, 1629 to 1682

Jacob van Ruisdael

Ruisdael made the flat Dutch land heroic. His skies are vast and moving, his trees struggle, his windmill at Wijk bij Duurstede stands against the clouds like a monument. He is the painter who taught later centuries to see a landscape as drama.
