Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam

Few hotels have had as many lives. The Grand began as two convents, became the lodging the city kept for visiting princes, then the Admiralty's headquarters, and then, when Napoleon's brother took the old city hall on the Dam for his palace, the city hall itself.

What sets Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam apart

    1. Two convents

The site was taken by two convents in the fifteenth century, St Cecilia's to the north and St Catherine's to the south, round courtyards that still give the hotel its shape.

    2. The Prinsenhof

After the Reformation the city turned the convent into a lodging for princes and great lords, the Prinsenhof, and in the seventeenth century the Admiralty of Amsterdam moved in.

    3. The city hall

In 1808 Louis Bonaparte took the city hall on the Dam for his palace, and the city's government moved here. It stayed until the 1980s, and the council chamber, with its lamps of the late 1920s, is now part of the hotel.

    4. In the old centre

The hotel is on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, one of the city's oldest canals, a few minutes from the Dam and the Nieuwmarkt.

    A hotel since 1992

The buildings round the courtyard were begun as convents in the fifteenth century, and after the Reformation passed to the city, which used them as lodgings for royal guests and then gave them to the Admiralty.

From 1808 they were Amsterdam's city hall, until the city moved its government to a new building in the 1980s. In 1992 they opened as a hotel.
