Painter, 1853 to 1890
Vincent van Gogh
Most of what Van Gogh painted he never sold, and it stayed with his brother's family. That is why Amsterdam can show his whole life as a painter, from the dark pictures of Nuenen to the last wheatfields of Auvers.

The life of Vincent van Gogh
When Vincent died in 1890, his work passed to Theo, who died six months later, and then to Theo's widow, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger, who spent her life making it known. Their son gave the collection to a foundation in 1962, and the Van Gogh Museum opened in 1973 to show it.
The museum hangs his work in order, so you can follow him from the earth colours of Brabant through Paris, Arles and Saint-Rémy to Auvers.
