The gallery

Nicholas Logsdail was still an art student when he opened a gallery on Bell Street, near Lisson Grove in north-west London, in 1967. It is still there. In its first years it was one of the few places in Britain to show the American Minimal and Conceptual artists, Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, Carl Andre and Dan Graham, as they were making their names.

In the 1980s the gallery introduced a generation of British sculptors, among them Anish Kapoor, Tony Cragg and Richard Deacon, each of whom went on to win the Turner Prize. Later it took on artists from further afield: Ai Weiwei, Marina Abramović, Lee Ufan, Carmen Herrera.

Lisson stayed in London alone for almost fifty years. It opened in New York in 2016, under the High Line, and since then in Shanghai, Beijing and Los Angeles.
