The gallery
Arne Glimcher was twenty-two when he opened Pace in Boston in 1960. He moved it to New York three years later, to 57th Street, then the centre of the trade. Among the artists he showed early and for decades were Louise Nevelson, Agnes Martin, Jean Dubuffet and Lucas Samaras.
From 1993 to 2010 the gallery was joined with the Old Master dealers Wildenstein, as PaceWildenstein, before the Glimcher family bought the business back. Under Marc Glimcher, the founder's son, it expanded abroad, to London, Hong Kong, Seoul, Geneva and Tokyo, and in 2019 opened a headquarters of eight storeys on West 25th Street in New York.
Its strength is the art of the American post-war generation and its heirs, from Rothko and Calder to the artists of light and space in California, alongside a contemporary programme that runs from David Hockney to the Japanese collective teamLab.
