The gallery
Marian Goodman began in 1965 as a publisher of artists' prints and multiples. She opened her gallery on 57th Street in New York in 1977, with an exhibition of the Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers, because she could find no American gallery willing to show him. For the next forty years she did the same for others: Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Christian Boltanski, Giuseppe Penone, Thomas Struth.
The gallery was known for doing the opposite of its larger rivals. It stayed small, kept its artists for decades, and expanded rarely: to Paris in 1995, and to Los Angeles only in 2023. In 2024 it left Midtown for a building in Tribeca.
Marian Goodman died in January 2026, at the age of ninety-seven. The gallery has been led since 2021 by a group of partners she appointed. It does not announce prices.
