The gallery
Emmanuel Perrotin opened his gallery in 1990, at the age of twenty-one, in the Paris apartment he lived in. Within a few years he had shown Damien Hirst, then unknown in France, and begun to work with two artists who would define the gallery: Maurizio Cattelan, who once had him spend an exhibition dressed as a pink rabbit, and Takashi Murakami, whom he showed outside Japan before anyone else.
The gallery moved in 2005 into an eighteenth-century mansion on the rue de Turenne, in the Marais, which remains its centre. It was among the first Western galleries to commit to Asia, opening in Hong Kong in 2012 and then in Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai, with New York in between and Los Angeles in 2024.
Perrotin has always been comfortable where art meets fashion, music and design, and runs bookshops and editions alongside its exhibitions. It seldom reports prices at fairs.
