Giovanni Bellini
Bellini painted in Venice for sixty years and taught the next generation, Giorgione and Titian among them. Dürer, visiting in 1506, wrote that he was very old and still the best painter of them all.

The head of the Venetian state in his robe of white and gold damask and horned cap, as fixed as a marble bust, against plain blue. The painter's name is on a slip of paper stuck to the ledge.

The Agony in the Garden
about 1458 to 1460
Christ kneels on a rock at dawn while the disciples sleep and the soldiers wind along the road. The pink light on the undersides of the clouds is one of the first true sunrises in Italian painting.
The life of Giovanni Bellini
Giovanni was the son of one painter, the brother of another and the brother-in-law of a third, Mantegna. He took up the oil technique that had come from the north and used it to paint light: the first Italian whose skies look like weather.
He was official painter to the Republic of Venice, and the portrait of its doge is the best picture that office produced.
