J Sheekey

Josef Sheekey was a market stallholder. In 1896 the landlord, Lord Salisbury, let him serve fish and shellfish in his new building on one condition: that he cater the suppers Salisbury gave after the theatre.

    Supper after the play

    The restaurant grew from one room into the neighbouring shops, and stayed in the Sheekey family for most of the twentieth century.

    It was restored in 1998 by the owners of The Ivy, a few streets away, and belongs to the same group today.
