Painter, 1397 to 1475
Paolo Uccello
Uccello was so taken with the new science of perspective, his wife said, that he would not come to bed. His battle is the result: every lance on the ground points to the same spot.

The Battle of San Romano
about 1438 to 1440
The Florentine commander on a white horse leads the charge against Siena under a hedge of roses and oranges. The broken lances and a fallen soldier are laid out on the ground like lines on a diagram.

Saint George and the Dragon
about 1470
The knight spears a two-legged dragon which the princess already holds on a lead, in front of a cave like a stage set. A storm gathers behind the saint in the shape of an eye.
The life of Paolo Uccello
Paolo di Dono, called Uccello, trained in the workshop of the sculptor Ghiberti in Florence and worked on mosaics in Venice before returning home. He painted frescoes for the cathedral and for Santa Maria Novella, and died poor and forgotten at seventy-eight.
The Battle of San Romano was painted in three panels for a Florentine family and later taken by Lorenzo de' Medici for his own bedroom. The other two are in the Uffizi and the Louvre.
