A hotel named for a painter
Léonard Tauber and Constant Baverez, who had already built the Regina and the Majestic, put up the Raphael in 1925 to the designs of the architect André Rousselot. They named it for the painter, in homage to the fine arts.
After May 1940 the hotel was taken over for senior German officers. The writer Ernst Jünger, then a captain in the army of occupation, lived in it in 1941 and 1942 and again in 1943 and 1944, and wrote part of his war journals here.
The Baverez family has run the hotel for several generations.
