The hotel of the Second Empire
The brothers Isaac and Émile Pereire, the bankers behind much of Haussmann's Paris, built the Grand Hôtel to the designs of Alfred Armand. Work began in April 1861. The Empress Eugénie inaugurated it on 5 May 1862, and it opened to guests on 30 June, with 800 rooms.
Victor Hugo gave parties here, and Émile Zola set the last scene of Nana in one of its rooms. In 1869 the newspaper owner James Gordon Bennett sent for Henry Morton Stanley and, in a suite of the hotel, told him to go and find Livingstone.
The hotel closed in December 2001 for a complete renovation and reopened on 5 April 2003. It is managed by InterContinental.
