Painter, 1477 to 1510
Giorgione
Giorgione painted for only a few years and few paintings are surely his. Yet his soft light, his landscapes and his mysterious subjects changed Venetian painting, and Titian, who worked beside him, carried them on.

The Tempest
about 1506 to 1508
A soldier and a nursing woman in a landscape under a storm, with a flash of lightning over the town: a picture whose subject has never been explained.

The Old Woman
about 1506
An old woman pointing to herself and holding a scroll that reads col tempo, with time: a portrait and a warning.
The life of Giorgione
Giorgione came from Castelfranco, on the mainland, and trained in Venice, perhaps with Giovanni Bellini. He painted for private collectors small pictures whose meaning was meant for them alone, and frescoes on the fronts of Venetian buildings, now almost gone.
He died of the plague in 1510, in his early thirties. The Tempest and the Old Woman in the Accademia are among the few pictures every scholar gives him.
