Teatro La Fenice: the phoenix of Venice
The Phoenix has lived up to its name. Opened in 1792, it burned in 1836 and again in 1996, and was rebuilt each time as it had been, gold and blue, its boxes rising in tiers. Verdi's Rigoletto and La Traviata were first performed on its stage.

An opera house that rose from its ashes twice
The theatre was built in the 1790s on the Campo San Fantin after its company lost the old one, and took the phoenix as its name. Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti wrote operas for it, and Verdi gave it five premieres, among them Rigoletto in 1851 and La Traviata in 1853.
In January 1996 an arson fire left only the outer walls standing. The city rebuilt it to the design of the nineteenth century and it reopened in 2003.
