Gallerie dell'Accademia: the painters of Venice
Venetian painting is a story told in colour, and the Accademia tells all of it, in a former convent and its church at the foot of the wooden Accademia bridge. Giorgione's Tempest is here, and the huge canvases of Carpaccio, Veronese and Tintoretto.

What to see at the Accademia
Giorgione's Tempest
A small, mysterious landscape with a soldier, a nursing mother and a flash of lightning, which no one has ever fully explained.
Bellini's Madonnas
Giovanni Bellini's Madonnas and altarpieces, the soft light and colour from which Venetian painting grew.
Carpaccio's St Ursula
The cycle of the legend of St Ursula, a run of great canvases full of ships, banners and Venetian life.
Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi
A Last Supper the Inquisition found too worldly, so Veronese changed its title rather than its figures.
Titian's Pietà
Titian's last painting, meant for his own tomb and finished after his death.

Venetian painting, from the gold grounds to Tiepolo
The gallery grew out of the Academy of Fine Arts founded in 1750, and opened to the public in 1817 with paintings gathered from the churches and convents Napoleon had closed. It fills the buildings of the Scuola della Carità, its church and the convent beside them.
It holds the finest collection of Venetian painting anywhere, from the gold grounds of Paolo Veneziano to the eighteenth century, and Leonardo's Vitruvian Man, shown only now and then because it is a drawing.
