St Mark's Campanile: Venice from above
The tallest building in Venice fell down one July morning in 1902 and was built again exactly as it had been. A lift takes you to the bell chamber, where the city, its domes and the islands of the lagoon lie spread out below.

The bells
Five bells, each with a name and a past role in the life of the Republic. Beware if you are up there on the hour.
The Loggetta

The tower that fell and rose again
A bell tower has stood here since the Middle Ages, and the one that rose over the square in the sixteenth century was the Venetians' landmark from the sea. In 1609 Galileo showed his telescope to the Republic's leaders from its top.
On 14 July 1902 it collapsed into a pile of rubble, killing no one but the custodian's cat. The city rebuilt it 'where it was, as it was', and it opened again in 1912.
