Peggy Guggenheim Collection: modern art on the Grand Canal
Peggy Guggenheim bought the art of her own time in Paris and New York, married Max Ernst, gave Jackson Pollock his first show, and in 1949 settled with her collection in an unfinished palace on the Grand Canal. It is one of the finest collections of twentieth-century art in Europe.

A collector's house on the Grand Canal
The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni was begun in the eighteenth century and never got past its ground floor, which is why it sits so low among its neighbours. Peggy Guggenheim lived here from 1949 until her death in 1979, opening her collection to visitors in the summers.
She left the house and the collection to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, her uncle's, which runs it as a museum. She is buried in its garden, beside her dogs.
