Ca' Pesaro: modern art in a baroque palace
Few modern art galleries have a front like this one, of carved stone rising from the Grand Canal. Inside, the city keeps the art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, much of it bought at the Biennale, and under the roof a collection of Japanese armour and lacquer.

Longhena's palace, given to the city
The palace was built for the Pesaro family to the design of Baldassare Longhena, who also built the Salute, from 1659, and finished after his death. In 1898 its last owner, the Duchess Felicita Bevilacqua La Masa, left it to the city.
It became the city's gallery of modern art, and its collection grew from works bought at the early Biennales. The top floor holds the Museum of Oriental Art, gathered by a prince of Bourbon-Parma on a journey to Asia in the 1880s.
