A chancellor's palace, opened as a hotel in 2008
Bartolomeo Scala, a miller's son who rose to be chancellor of Florence and a trusted man of Lorenzo the Magnificent, had the house built on farmland just inside the walls. It passed by inheritance to the Medici in 1585 and later to the della Gherardesca counts, whose name it keeps.
The palace and its annexes were restored for Four Seasons, and the hotel opened in June 2008.
