What sets The St. Regis Florence apart
On the Arno
The long side of the building, eleven windows wide, looks straight over the river to the Oltrarno and the hill of Bellosguardo.
Built to be a hotel
The present building went up about 1855 as the Hotel Royal de la Paix, for the foreign visitors who wintered in Florence. Queen Victoria was among its guests.
The Grand Hotel
In 1897 the Swiss hotelier Gérard Kraft took it over, added a floor and renamed it the Grand Hotel, the name Florentines knew it by for more than a century.
Brunelleschi's ghost
A palace of the Giuntini family stood here before it, and Vasari says it was designed by Brunelleschi. Nothing of it can be seen.

Florence's Grand Hotel, under a new name
When the embankment along the Arno was laid out in the middle of the nineteenth century, the old Giuntini palace on Piazza Ognissanti was rebuilt as a hotel for the international set. Gérard Kraft made it the Grand Hotel in 1897.
The CIGA company bought it in 1957 and restored it at length between 1974 and 1986. Since May 2011 it has been The St. Regis Florence.
