The life of Raphael

Raphael was born in Urbino in 1483 and trained with Perugino. In Florence he painted a series of Madonnas for the city's merchants, each a new solution to the same group of mother and children, and the portraits of a wool merchant and his wife that now hang in the Uffizi.

In 1508 the pope called him to Rome, where he stayed until his death in 1520. The later pictures in the Pitti Palace came to Florence through the Medici.
