Rivoire
The view is the reason, and nobody pretends otherwise. From a table at Rivoire you look across the square at the Palazzo Vecchio, the Neptune fountain and the Loggia dei Lanzi, with a cup of thick hot chocolate in front of you.

What Rivoire is known for
The chocolate
Rivoire began as a chocolate factory, and its hot chocolate, dense enough to hold a spoon, is what Florentines come for in winter. It is served with or without whipped cream.
The terrace
The tables outside face the front of the Palazzo Vecchio. You pay for the seat as much as for the cup, and it is worth doing once.
The counter
Inside, standing at the bar among the boxes of chocolates, the coffee costs what it costs anywhere.

A chocolate maker who followed the court
Enrico Rivoire made chocolate for the House of Savoy in Turin. When Florence became the capital of the new kingdom he followed the court south, and in 1872 opened his factory and shop on the corner of Piazza della Signoria. The court had moved on to Rome by then. Rivoire stayed.
