Painter, 1452 to 1519
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo came to Florence as a boy and stayed until he was thirty. The three paintings in the Uffizi show him at the start: a pupil outdoing his master, then a young painter trying something nobody had tried.

The Annunciation
about 1472 to 1476
The angel kneels on a lawn of flowers and the Virgin looks up from her book, in front of a garden wall and a harbour dissolving into haze. He was about twenty. The angel's wings were studied from a bird's.

The Adoration of the Magi
1481 to 1482
A crowd pressing round the Virgin and Child, with ruins and fighting horsemen behind, left as a drawing in brown on the panel when he moved to Milan. It shows how he built a picture before colour.

The Baptism of Christ
about 1470 to 1475
By his master Verrocchio. The kneeling angel at the far left, and parts of the landscape, are by the young Leonardo. Vasari says Verrocchio never touched a brush again.
The life of Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo was born near Vinci, thirty kilometres west of Florence, in 1452, and was apprenticed in his teens to the sculptor and painter Andrea del Verrocchio. He stayed in the city until about 1482, when he left for the court of Milan.
He came back in 1500 for some years, and it was in Florence that he began the Mona Lisa and the lost Battle of Anghiari for the Palazzo Vecchio. He took the first away with him. The second he abandoned.
