What sets Hotel Savoy apart
The square
Piazza della Repubblica was made in the 1890s by clearing the old market and the ghetto. The Savoy went up as part of it, and the cafés Gilli and Paszkowski are across the paving.
The Medici's first houses
The block stands on the site of the tower houses where the Medici lived before they were rich, and of the church of San Tommaso, their parish.
The front
The building is by the architect Vincenzo Micheli. In niches on the first floor stand statues of the four seasons by Vincenzo Rosignoli.
Two minutes from everything
The Duomo is 200 metres one way and Piazza della Signoria 300 the other, down a street closed to cars.
What it has

Built with the square it stands on
The hotel dates itself to 1893. The building was put up as a hotel from the start, as the Albergo Savoia, when the centre of Florence was being rebuilt, and it has been among the first hotels of the city ever since.
Its interiors were redone in 1935 by Maurizio Tempestini and again in 2000 by Olga Polizzi for Rocco Forte Hotels, who own it.
