What Giubbe Rosse is known for
The red jackets
Two German brewers opened it as a beer hall. The waiters wore red jackets in the Viennese fashion, and Florentines, who could not pronounce the name over the door, called it after them.
The fight
The painter Ardengo Soffici attacked the Futurists of Milan in the magazine La Voce. They came to Florence, found him here, and the two sides fought it out in the café before making peace.
Montale's table
Between the wars the poets of Hermeticism gathered here round Eugenio Montale, and the young painters round Ottone Rosai.

From beer hall to literary café
The café opened in 1897, when the building on the new square was finished. In its first years it housed a chess club whose visitors are said to have included Lenin, with André Gide and the sculptor Medardo Rosso among the regulars.
Its fame belongs to the years of Futurism and of the magazines Lacerba, La Voce and Leonardo, when it was the liveliest meeting place of writers and artists in the city. It kept that character until the last war.
