Painter, 1928 to 1987

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol came to New York in 1949 to draw shoes for magazines. Thirteen years later he painted a tin of soup, then every other flavour of it, and the idea of what a painting could be changed again.

The Museum of Modern Art2 works

  1. Campbell's Soup Cans

    1962

Thirty-two small canvases, each a tin of soup painted by hand to look printed, identical but for the name of the flavour. They hang in a grid, in the order the company brought the soups out.

  2. Gold Marilyn Monroe

    1962

The actress's face, taken from a publicity photograph and printed in garish colour, small in the middle of a large field of gold, like the saint in an icon. He made it in the weeks after her death.

Whitney Museum of American Art1 work

  1. Green Coca-Cola Bottles

    1962

Seven rows of sixteen bottles, printed a little unevenly, over the company's logo. What was great about America, he said, was that the richest and the poorest drank the same thing.

The life of Andy Warhol

Warhol was born in Pittsburgh in 1928, the son of immigrants from what is now Slovakia, and was a successful commercial artist through the 1950s. In 1962 he showed thirty-two canvases of Campbell's soup, one for each variety, lined up on a shelf like goods in a shop. The same year he began to print his pictures by silkscreen, so that they could be repeated without end.

His studio, which he called the Factory, turned out paintings, films, a magazine and a rock band. He was shot and nearly killed there in 1968. He died in a New York hospital in 1987 after routine surgery. His works are still under copyright and are not pictured here.
