For most of a century a Broadway opening night ended at Sardi's, where the cast waited at their tables for the first reviews. The walls are covered with the faces of everyone who mattered in the theatre.

What Sardi's is known for
The caricatures
Vincent Sardi hired a Russian refugee, Alex Gard, to draw the stars who came in, and paid him in meals. There are now more than a thousand on the walls, and new ones are still added.
Before and after the show
The kitchen serves before the curtain and after it, and the staff know when each theatre lets out.
The Tony Award
The idea of an annual prize for the theatre, which became the Tony Awards, was worked out at a table here.

Broadway's dining room
The Sardis ran a smaller restaurant nearby from 1921 and moved into the present one, in a new building put up by the Shubert theatre owners, in 1927. Their son kept it until the 1980s. It has since been sold, closed for a time and reopened, and is still what it was.
