The pipes
Regulars once kept a long clay pipe at the house, to be brought to the table after dinner. More than fifty thousand hang in rows from the ceilings, one of the largest collections in the world.
The mutton chop
The dish the house is known for, a saddle of mutton cut thick. The millionth was sold in 1935.
The rooms
A warren of dark panelled dining rooms on two floors, hung with playbills, prints and photographs of the nineteenth century.

The pipe club
Albert Keen opened his English chop house in 1885, among the theatres of Herald Square. It was a club as much as a restaurant, and its members left their pipes in its keeping.
Women were refused until 1905. That year Lillie Langtry, the most famous actress of her day, was turned away, sued, and won.
