The second Waldorf
The first Waldorf-Astoria stood on Fifth Avenue and was pulled down in 1929 to make room for the Empire State Building. The second, by Schultze and Weaver, opened on Park Avenue in 1931: forty-seven floors and 191 metres, the tallest hotel in the world until 1957.
It closed in March 2017. The upper floors became apartments and the lower eighteen kept 375 hotel rooms, far larger than before. The hotel reopened in July 2025.
