The life of Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands in 1853 and did not begin to paint until he was twenty-seven. In ten years he made about nine hundred paintings, most of them in the last four, in Paris, Arles, the asylum at Saint-Rémy and Auvers, where he shot himself in July 1890.
The three paintings in Rome all date from the asylum and after. Two were bought for the national gallery of modern art. The Pietà was given to the Vatican for the collection of modern religious art that Pope Paul VI opened in 1973.
